OCD Treatment in Salt Lake City

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by intrusive, repetitive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that a person feels compelled to perform. The compulsions are performed in an attempt to relieve anxiety caused by the obsessions. Common obsessions include fears of contamination, excessive concern about order or symmetry, aggressive or taboo thoughts, and a need for things to be done perfectly. Common compulsions include hand-washing, cleaning, counting, checking, and repeating words, phrases, or prayers.

How is OCD Treated?

Treatment for OCD typically involves a combination of medication and psychotherapy. The most commonly used medications for OCD are Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), which have been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of the disorder. The most commonly used psychotherapy for OCD is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), specifically Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which involves gradually confronting feared situations and avoiding compulsive behaviors. Other forms of psychotherapy that may be used to treat OCD include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-based therapies, and Family-Focused Therapy. In severe cases, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) may be used as a treatment for OCD.
